Knockout Cup Finals Night - 2011

As the month of January comes to and end as does the Knock out Cup competition for mixed teams. The first week in January the competition begins and the final was held last Thursday 20th January in Capoquin. There were 5 finals on the night with a great variety of meetings of clubs in the finals. This was another successful night for WCBA and for the county executive.

It was a hard fought competition throughout the month of January with teams playing one or two other teams to make the final. The matches are played on a home and away format with 6 games each night, 2 men’s doubles, 2 ladies doubles and 2 mixed. So given that there are 6 points on offer many ties come down to the count back of sets and aces. This year was no exception, with section B bringing up 2 very close semi finals with Kilmacthomas beating Lismore by the virtue of a set but even closer was Waterford 2 victory over Waterford 3 by the virtue of 10 aces. Ten aces over 12 games (a minimum of 24 sets) shows how closely the teams in the sections were matched. This was highlighted further by the final in Section B with the tie coming down to the last game, as did a number of other finals on the night.
