Waterford County Badminton Notes 5/10

Waterford Players Win 6 Titles at the Munster Singles Championships
The winners of the Waterford Singles Championships represented the county in the Munster Singles Championships in Killarney on Sunday 11th April. The following players won Munster titles:
Ladies Grade 2 Therese Heffernan (Ballymacarbry)
Ladies Grade 3 Katherine O’Sullivan (Dunmore)
Ladies Grade 4 Mary-Claire McHatton (Lady Lane)
Men’s Grade 1 Michael Plos (Lady Lane)
Men’s Grade 4 Gary Alcorn (Lismore)
Men’s Grade 6 Brendan Meaghan (Lismore)
Eileen Keoghan (Kilmacthomas), Ber O’Keeffe (Lismore), Kevin Fahy (Lady Lane), Shane Barry (Ballymacarbry) and Neville Murphy (Dunmore) also represented Waterford and performed very well.

Mixed Leagues
Section A
Lismore 1 beat Waterford 2 4-3 in Cappoquin on Thursday to retain the Section A Mixed League Title.

The match began along expected lines with Michael Plos, the County Grade 1 Singles Champion defeating Kieran Cahill in two sets and Gemma Tobin in a renewal of her rivalry with Lucia Ondrejova levelling the match at a point a piece with a two set victory.

Next up was the Men’s Doubles and in what proved to be the game of the night the Waterford pairing of Kevin Fahy and Shafiq triumphed in a three set thriller on a score line of 21-17, 17-21, 21-18. Following that was the ladies doubles with Tanya Morrissey and Nora O’Sullivan defeating Ann Smith and Fiona Walsh in two sets leaving the score level at 2 all.

In the first mixed John Fleming and Gemma Tobin beat Michael Plos and Lucia Ondrejova. Kevin Fahy and Fiona Walsh beat Kieran Cahill and Tanya Morrissey in the second mixed. Lismore went on to win the third mixed and claim the Section A title.

Waterford: Michael Plos, Kevin Fahy, Shafiq, Lucia Ondrejova, Fiona Walsh and Anne Smith.
Section B
Ballymacarbry 2 beat Waterford 3 in a thrilling final held in Touraneena. Ballymac won the Men’s Singles, Ladies Singles and Men’s doubles to go into a 3-0 lead. However Waterford fought back to win the Ladies Doubles and First and Second Mixed to level it at 3-3. Ballymac held on to win the Third Mixed and take the Section B title.

Section C
Kilmacthomas 1 beat Dunmore 3 in another closely contested final held in Lady Lane on Thursday. Kilmac won the Men’s and Ladies Singles to take a 2-0 lead but Dunmore won the Men’s and Ladies Doubles to level it. Kilmac and Dunmore won a Mixed game each to leave the score at 3-3 going into the final mixed. Kilmac won the third mixed to take the Section C title.

Dunmore: Seamus Hearne, Barry Cantwell, Stephen McNamara (sub), Jeanne McNamara ©, Mary Ryan and Iris Graham.
Section D
Dunmore 4 beat Lismore 4-1. This match was much closer that the scoreline suggests. Dunmore won the Men’s and Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles and First Mixed to clinch the title.
Dunmore: Stephen McNamara ©. Mick Kennedy, Neville Murphy, Loretta Dwyer, Suzanne Brady and Angela Gilmartin.
Lismore: Craig Tobin, Brendan Meaghan, Liam O’Gorman (sub), Geraldine Conway, Rebecca Coleman and Anne O’Sullivan,
Section E
Modeligo beat Kilmacthomas 4-1 in Cappoquin.

Haynes Cup
Gemma Tobin (Lismore) and Liam McNamara (Ballymacarbry) were members of the U.C.C. team that won the Haynes Cup in Killarney. Katherine O’Sullivan (Dunmore) was a guest player on the Mungret/St. Paul’s team (Limerick) that won the Haynes Sheild. Waterford Badminton Club were runners up in the Haynes Shield. Team: Thomas Power, Shafiq, Robert Power, Jason Fahy, Anne Smith ©, Lena Sexton, Mary-Claire McHatton and Margaret Corkery.

Munster Doubles/Mixed Championships
Good luck to all the players representing Waterford in the Munster Doubles Championships which will be held in U.L. on Sunday 18th April.
