Waterford County Badminton Notes 6/10

Lady Lane Win Munster Club Title
Division 1B
The Munster Club Championships took place in the University of Limerick on Sunday 25th April. Five Waterford club teams represented the county. In Division 1B Lady Lane beat Ballycommon 3-1 and Cork 5-2 to take the Munster title. They now go through to represent Munster in the All-Ireland Club Championships. We wish them the best of luck in this competition. Lady Lane Team: Timmy Keogh, Michael Plos, Kevin Fahy, Shafiq, Ann Smith, Fiona Walsh, Lucia Ondrejova and Aoife Maher.
Intermediate
Ballymacarbry represented Waterford in the Intermediate Section. Unfortunately they came up against the eventual winners, Mungret, in the first round and were beaten 4-0.
Ballymacarbry Team: Shane Barry, Darren Blanche, Dean Madden, Mary Wall, Sarah Walsh, Ann O’Donnell.
Junior
The first of the Dunmore teams competed in the Junior Section. In the first round they played Killaloe and won 4-1. The semi-final against Templemore was a close affair ending in a scoreline of 4-2 to the Tipperary club.
Dunmore Team: Seamus Hearne, Barry Cantwell, John Byrne, Siobhan Furlong, Mary Ryan, Jeanne McNamara, Iris Graham.
Graduate
Dunmore played U.C.C. in the first round of the Graduate competition. Dunmore put in a good performance but lost 4-2.
Dunmore Team: Stephen McNamara, Michael Kennedy, David Flynn, Loretta Dwyer, Carol Chapman and Deirdre McCarthy.
Minor
Kilmacthomas represented Waterford in the Minor Section. Kilmac were unlucky to meet a strong Ballycommon team in the first round and lost 4-0.
Kilmacthomas Team: Michael Brown, Frank Costigan, James Hurton, Ian Gourley, Ann Halley, Chrissie Shanahan, Siobhan Linehan.
Gemma Tobin (Lismore) and Liam McNamara (Ballymacarbry) were part of the U.C.C. team which won the Premier Section. Trudy Kennedy (Ballymacarbry) competed with Ballycommon of Tipperary.


Waterford Players Win 6 Titles at the Munster Doubles and Mixed Championships

Ladies Doubles
The Munster Men’s, Ladies and Mixed Doubles Championships were held in U.L. on Sunday 18th April. After last weeks success in the Munster Singles Championships Waterford players maintained their high standards at the Doubles and Mixed. In the first of three ladies titles, Tanya Morrissey and Gemma Tobin (Lismore) won the Division 1 Ladies Doubles. Two more titles were added by Lena and Rebecca Sexton (Lady Lane) in Division 3 and Mary-Claire McHatton (Lady Lane) and Siobhan Furlong (Dunmore) in Division 4. In the Grade 5 Ladies Doubles Loretta Dwyer (Dunmore) and Natalie Brown (Kilmacthomas) were Runners Up, only losing to the winning Kerry pair by one set.

Men’s Doubles
Jackie Dunne and Anthony Feicks (Dunmore) won the Division 3 Men’s title while Craig Tobin and Nigel Aird (Lismore) edged ahead of Limerick in the final round to take the Division 5 title. In the Men’s Division 4 competition Gary Alcorn and Jason Tobin (Lismore) were Runners Up losing 21-20 to the eventual winners.

Mixed Doubles
The long term Mixed Doubles partnership of Nora O’Sullivan and John Pratt (Lismore) beat tough opposition to win the Division 2 Mixed Doubles title.
